Run, Walk, MTB

a trail event on 22 February 2025

  • The courses are across variable terrain over moderate to steep farmland taking in spectacular views.
  • Walk, run and cycle options.
  • Run/Walk - Three distances 42km 21km & 10km over fantastic South Otago farmland. Taking in an elevated landmark (about 620m).
  • !!!!Exciting!!!! Due to our 2025 rider's feedback we are introducing two new tracked MTB sections - Tracked Trail MTB over completely new country.

 Run/Walk

Varied moderate farmland terrain. Parents with dependent children may enter using the ‘Family 10km’ option.

  Aid stations on track but competitors are expected to carry own hydration and fuel. No disposable cups on course. Please provide your own reusable cup at aid stations.

Variable farmland terrain with some steep sections and unformed track. Aid stations on track but competitors are expected to carry own hydration and fuel.

No disposable cups on course. Please provide your own reusable cup at aid stations. Although there is no minimum age we highly recommend that competitors be over 18 years.

Run/Walk

Variable farmland terrain with steep sections and some unformed track. Trail to be cleared by 7pm so cut off times will be in-forced.

Aid stations at strategic junctions but competitors are expected to carry own hydration and fuel. Strictly no disposable cups on course so carry your own please.

All rubbish/clothing must be carried off course by competitors or placed in receptacle at aid stations. Although there is no minimum age we highly recommend that competitors be over 18 years.

Family Run/Walk

Moderate farmland terrain – not suitable for pushchairs – Entry includes sundae voucher for children and finishers medals for the group. A separate ‘child’ entry form is required for each dependent child (up to 4 per parent).

Please ensure this is done and that an email to organizers to confirm child’s relationship to parent, age, school attending is sent to challengekuriwao@gmail.com

Teams Relay

4 groups of up to 3 people

Grab your team and complete the 21km run/walk as a relay. Why not challenge your opposing rugby, netball, soccer team? Or just sort out (up to) 12 of your closest mates and complete the challenge. Each relay team entry includes a voucher for a light refreshment at the Crossroads Clinton during happy hour on the 22nd February.

Entry fee is $30pp and includes your refreshment voucher, race pack for each competitor and bragging rights if your team comes in fast and furious.

Please note – there is no minimum age on this event but if there are under 16s in the team they MUST be accompanied by a responsible adult. Please contact Race Director Lynley Daly to ensure you are choosing the most appropriate sections for the fitness level of juniors. Teams MUST consist of minimum 4 people and maximum 12 people. Teams must fill out one entry for each team member AND you will need to EMAIL the list of names of the members and team name to the race director challengekuriwao@gmail.com

21km of quiet rural roads and well formed farm tracks. Challenging elevations, amazing views and sensational downhills. Much thanks to our 2024 MTB competitors for giving us feedback to create a new race to make our event great!

Although no minimum age is stated we highly recommend competitors are 18 or over.

Entry includes transfer from finishing area back to your vehicles at the start area. Security & claim chits will be issued for bikes whilst you are away. Families – please use the family entry form.

 The Peak Cross Country

Ridden over the same trail as the run/walk. Cyclists are responsible for safe passing of any other competitors ESPECIALLY on the downhill aspects of the course.

You will be required to carry your bike down a short section of tussock country on the South side of The Peak and there is one boundary fence that your cycle will need to be lifted over.

E-Bikes – please enter the Long Track E-Bike section there is no 21km section for E-bikes. Although no minimum age is stated we highly recommend competitors are 16 or over.

Information

Disclaimer

Although no minimum age is stated we highly recommend competitors are 16 or over. Under 16’s MUST be fully accompanied on course by a responsible adult.  Please email Race Director challengekuriwao@gmail.com to confirm named adult and name & age of child.

Courses

Run/Walk trail lengths are 42km, 21km and 10km.  The two longer trails will take in both The Peak and the Three Rocks landmarks.  The 10km will be a little gentler with it’s elevations and loop through the lower farmland, but still manage some very special views.

The 21km Peak Cross Country MTB track is the same as the running track – expect a bit of carry, a tough ascent and spectacular views combined with some fun downhills.

Our NEW MTB Long track and the Three Rocks MTB 20km start at the Owaka Valley Road start zone and finish at the Clinton Rugby Club – your entry includes transfer back to the start zone.  Security for your bikes will be provided while you collect vehicles.

The two longer trails will take in both The Peak and the Three Rocks landmarks.  The 10km will be a little gentler with it’s elevations and loop through the lower farmland, but still manage some very special views.

The race itself takes in the varied terrain of farmland, track, road, tussock country, forestry and the views from the entire course are magnificent.

Aid stations will be placed at strategic points around the tracks and marshalls will be on hand at intersections and gates.  Most of the course has full cellphone coverage and timing chips/mats will allow competitors to be live tracked.

Start/Finish

Based out of Clinton, South Otago runners, walkers and the 21km Peak Cross Country MTB will start and finish at the local rugby club on Hillfoot Road where there are plenty of toilet and shower facilities.  

The MTB Long Track & MTB 20km sections start on Owaka Valley Road and finish at the Clinton Rugby Club.

Local groups will be catering the event and there is plenty of room for supporters to base themselves for the event.

All of our finishers get a medal plus complimentary burger and fizzy refreshment.

Getting there

Prize

  • Prizes are announced online
  • Please enjoy the cold beverage and burger supplied at the finish and enjoy our hospitality.
  • Late finishers may need to collect these at Crossroads Clinton.
  • Course closes 7pm subject to race director’s discretion.
  • All completing competitors receive a race medal.  
  • Primary age children running/MTB with parents will receive a voucher for an ice cream sundae at Crossroads Clinton.

About Clinton

Locally there are playgrounds, swimming pools, golf course, garage, dairy, gift shop, bookstore, pub, cafe, motels.  So plenty of places to explore before and after the race.

If you feel like a wander away from the Rugby Club grounds you might like to walk back to the Main Road (SH1), turn South (left) and visit the Playground in the Triangle, go see Sid from Clinton Express, call in for an ice cream from Jo at the Food for Thought, grab a wee bit of shopping from Rebecca at Chairful or grab a superb Strictly Coffee & a bite to eat (or something adult and fizzy) from Lyn & Ella and their team at Crossroads Clinton (open 11 am) then carry on down to Pages Read and grab a gem of a book from Janice.

Local Accommodation – Crossroads Clinton has warm comfy motel units and lodge style accommodation with full restaurant & bar onsite.  Open daily from 11 am.
